Neon Sign Industry Statistics 2026

Market size estimates, LED vs. glass adoption, running costs and search demand: the numbers behind the neon sign industry in 2026, compiled and sourced by a working LA neon shop.

The neon sign industry, by the numbers

Neon and LED neon are having a real moment. Social platforms, wedding decor and brand storefronts have all pushed demand higher over the last few years. Here's what the available data actually shows for 2026, with sources, plus a few numbers from our own shop floor in Los Angeles.

Market size: use these with caution

Market-research estimates for the "neon signs" category vary enormously depending on how a firm defines it: glass neon only, glass plus LED, or the entire illuminated signage market. Pulling from five different market-research publishers, 2026 estimates ranged from roughly $315 million to $8.1 billion for ostensibly the same global neon sign market. The broader illuminated and signage-lighting market, which includes non-neon categories, is estimated at roughly $32–33 billion in 2026.

Take any single "market size" figure you see cited, including ours, with real skepticism unless the source defines its category precisely.

Reported drivers of the LED shift, per the sources below: lower running cost, longer service life, and easier shipping and installation for large pieces. Other research firms report different LED-share numbers for the same year (see the market-size caveat above). 44.2% is Coherent Market Insights' figure specifically, cited here because it's the most precisely sourced number we found, not a market-wide consensus.

Regional demand

  • North America is estimated to hold roughly 32–35% of global neon and illuminated-signage demand in 2026, with Asia-Pacific close behind and growing faster (Verified Market Reports).
  • Retail and hospitality are widely described as the largest commercial demand drivers for illuminated signage across the sources reviewed, though we didn't find a specific, independently verifiable percentage for retail's exact share worth citing here.

What's driving demand in 2026

  • Personalization. Custom, one-off designs, names, logos, dates, private jokes, are displacing stock "OPEN" or bar-style signs as the dominant request category across multiple industry sources.
  • Social media and photo ops. Signage is increasingly commissioned to work as a backdrop for photos and content, not just as passive signage, a trend we see directly in commissions for brand activations, retail pop-ups and events.
  • Home decor. Neon has moved well beyond storefronts and bars into living rooms and home offices, driven by short-form video and interior-design trends.
  • Seasonality. Search interest for neon signage is not flat. It spikes around Q4 for holiday decor and gifting, and again around wedding season, with a summer trough.

Our own numbers (Neon Flamingo, Los Angeles)

  • Standard build time on a custom sign, from approved artwork: 2–4 weeks, with rush builds in under 24 hours for emergencies.
  • Typical custom sign pricing: roughly $500–$2,500 for most residential and small business work; large, multi-color, high-labor commercial glass neon can run $2,500–$10,000+.
  • LED requests have been outpacing glass neon requests day to day in our shop through 2026, consistent with the broader LED-share trend reported above.
